An Introduction to Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

I have experience working with clients who have depression, anxiety, trauma histories including complex trauma, childhood emotional neglect, intimacy & attachment concerns, and other issues that interfere with living a fulfilling life. A core component of the treatment I provide is often based on psychodynamic psychotherapy. The goal of relational psychodynamic psychotherapy is to help clients explore how their past affects them today and to understand how their reactions and responses are both adaptations to their past as well as how they impact their present and future as well as to utilize relationships as a template to understand ourselves more fully. Engaging in any type of psychotherapy has benefits and risks.

What to Expect

Since therapy often involves talking about unpleasant aspects of your life, you may experience uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, guilt, anger, shame, frustration, and helplessness. These feelings are often to be expected and are an important part of the treatment itself, to be discussed and worked through. Therapy has been shown to have many benefits. It can lead to better relationships, a greater sense of agency over one’s life direction, solutions to specific problems, insights into one’s core values, and significant reductions in feelings of distress.
